Aliens and Earth...Why take the detour?

So I was chatting with a good friend of mine about the sci-fi story I am researching and working on. Now when I mentioned aliens, my buddy’s eyes lit up and he started a stream of suggestions on why the aliens would come here.

I just sat aghast at his suggestions. All of them were pop science reasons for aliens to visit our little wet world. Starting with water, according to, let’s call him Sam to preserve his identity, according to Sam water being a catalyst for life and rare in the galaxy they would come to gather our water.

Water is a combination of elements, hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and oxygen is the third most abundant with helium being second.  Understanding that hydrogen and oxygen combine to make water it is easy to surmise that water is indeed abundant in the universe. Water in liquid form may be rare, we really don’t know, but water itself is not rare in the form of ice. Frozen water can be found in abundance throughout our solar system and presumable in greater quantity in the deeper reaches of space.

He continued and I nodded politely as he started his excited discourse on why aliens would enslave us for our gold and make us mine the rare metal for them. They would be using the precious metal to ‘seed” their atmosphere so they can live.

First there is gold in the universe, probably more in a single asteroid field than all the gold on earth combined. With that two questions come to mind immediately, the first is how do they know that this planet has gold?

And two, why would they enslave frail humans when they have the technology and intelligence to create machines to mine the metal far more efficiently?

Also gold can be manufactured through irradiating platinum or mercury, so aliens could probably make gold and on a much larger scale than we can currently.

Taking a deep breath Sam continued, Aliens want us for our DNA in order for them to continue their race.

Well…if aliens have the technology to splice DNA and create a hybrid human/alien why could they not simply bio-engineer their own DNA to sustain them through whatever hardship they may be going through.

Nodding Sam continued that aliens would come here to Earth to kill us because they are afraid of us as a species. Hmm. We have not gone very far in our own solar system, and our space faring technology is very limited so the idea that aliens would come here to kill us because they fear us is laughable.

But I do agree that they would come here because they are interested in the hairless apes who sent “I love Lucy “ and “The Honeymooners” out in the universe some 60 some odd years ago, followed by a host of bad television and news casts about how mankind treats mankind on a daily base.
